Communications Intern - WTA Tour (St. Petersburg, FL)

Internship will last approximately 26 weeks from January 2018 - July 2018, 40 hours per week in St. Petersburg, FL.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with media monitoring and reporting
  • Distributing daily clippings report
  • Weekly champion’s clips
  • Building media contact lists and maintaining contact databases
  • Writing media notes for tournaments scheduled throughout the 2018 season
  • Organize the monthly department call and other departments calls, taking and sharing minutes
  • Updating rolling documents for department use (issues management, WTA statements, etc.)
  • Assist with updating Player Toolkits
  • Research best practices across other organizations
  • Research and update historical data
  • Assist with Tour publications including weekly newsletter
  • Special projects, as required

 Ideal Experience and Traits

  • The candidate must be recently graduated or currently enrolled in college/university
  • Studies and/or experience in the area of Communications, Public Relations, Digital Media and/or Marketing
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Excellent analytic and organizational skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Advanced computer experience using word processing and spreadsheets
  • Confidential and dependable
  • Tennis knowledge preferred, not required

Information Systems/Technical Services: Computer Information Systems
Software Developer - WTA Tour (St. Petersburg, FL)

Position Summary:

This is a full-time position based on the following:

  • C# and JavaScript development
  • Maintenance of existing codebase including HTML, JavaScript, C#
  • Creation, modification and maintenance of website features using Drupal
  • Internal customer support including user management and maintenance
  • Implementation and maintenance of 3rd party software
  • Support of day to day SQL database tasks

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years development experience using C# and .NET
  • Proficient in C#, .NET, Drupal, HTML, JavaScript, and XML using Visual Studio and other tools
  • Proficient with Microsoft SQL and Sybase
  • Skilled in version control - VSTS preferred
  • The ideal candidate will possess a passion for and understanding of the sport of tennis, related governing bodies and industry stakeholders
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work well under pressure and drive projects
  • Detail oriented
  • Excellent analytic and organizational skills

Sports, Science, & Medicine Internship (January-April 2018) - WTA Tour (St. Petersburg, FL)

Position Summary
Position is a paid internship with tentative dates of January 2018 through April 2018 (Spring Semester). The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to observe and participate in all aspects of the Sports, Science and Medicine within a worldwide professional sports organization. Duties include but are not limited to:

• Medical data entry into Sutton Electronic (ARMS) documentation system
• Medical data review for research purposes/ collection
• Review, scan and organize R&D articles (journal articles, research papers, etc.)
• Assist with tournament supply coordination
• Assist with various projects, including but not limited to programs in exercise, nutrition, physicals, athlete care, orthotics and equipment
• Assist with research and presentation materials
• Assist in production of player education materials

Minimum Qualifications
• Obtaining or recently obtained degrees in Statistics, Health Information Systems, Analytics, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Medical Documentation preferred
• Athletic training background preferred, but not required
• Medical documentation background preferred, but not required
• Computer literate with electronic documentation skills
• Experience with tennis and/ or "individual" skills
• Interest to increase medical documentation skills
• Strong computer skills
• Good academic standing
• Ability to multi-task

Communications: Communications Department Management
Sr. Manager, Corporate Communications - WTA Tour (St. Petersburg, FL)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Strategic PR for corporate communications and publicity
  • Writing and implementing PR strategy to raise the profile of the tour and its emerging superstars
  • Writing and producing PR content for communications tools, reports and publications
  • Keeping key WTA stakeholders and media up to date and informed
  • Proactive pitching of corporate, player, and tournament news, storylines, profiles
  • Tactical support for corporate, global publicity and on site media relations and operations
  • On-site press & publicity management possible: Travel approximately 25-50 days/year

Detailed responsibilities include:

Corporate PR Newsroom

  • News outreach (top of mind news; serve as the source to break the news)
  • News distribution (effective targeted outreach, mostly driving media to WTA channels)

Written and audiovisual PR materials

  • Press Releases; Official announcements; Media requests, information and intelligence research; Video communication; Preparation of Official Letters
  • Responsibility for writing and managing production of the following publications:
    • Update and upkeep of historical records; Fact Sheets (corporate, business, ad hoc); Issues Management Messaging (talking points and guidelines); Weekly PR planning kept up to date and distributed internally

External Communication and Media Distribution

  • Media outreach strategy, target and plan
  • Oversee and provide input to the development and maintenance of media contacts database

Media Relations

  • Proactive pitching of news, storylines, interviews and profiles – executive, player, tournament and corporate
  • Handling media enquiries
  • Possibility to serve as on site additional support for accredited media operations and broadcast when needed (approximately 5 tournaments/year)

Press and Publicity

  • PR activity will target consumer and lifestyle media outside of tournaments, as well as occasional implementation on site at WTA events and tournaments for both consumer as well as sports media 
  • Actively involved in cross-platform content coordination and development
  • Tracking and reporting – distribution of daily press clippings and special reports on announcements, campaigns

Skills & Background:

  • University degree (BA/BS) in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or equivalent
  • 6 + years of previous public relations experience; experience in corporate communications and/or sports public relations/marketing/journalism preferred
  • International PR communication experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills/team-oriented
  • Creative writing ability: can create and make the headlines
  • Knowledge of media relations and practices and good media relations contacts
  • Tennis knowledge desirable
  • Highl level of professinalism
  • Self motivated and ability to work independently
